The class is designed for Novices of all ages: Youth from 12-15, Juniors 16-18, and Adults to 90 years young. Novices must be at least 80 pounds, be able to swim and feel comfortable around the water. It is recommended that youth sailors are accompanied by a parent / guardian.
All Novices must wear an approved, properly fitting life jacket at all times while on the docks and in the BOATS. If you do not have a jacket one will be provided. Suitable foot attire must be worn on the docks and in the boats at all times. It is also recommended you use sun block, SUNGLASSES, and hat with retaining straps, sailing gloves and a towel.
All Novices are expected to behave in a respectful manner and obey the rules of the Club. We reserve the right to dismiss any student who does not respect the rules of the Club or the sailing program.
Novice sailing courses begin Thursday April 20th and are held every Thursday through the summer. Classes begin at 6pm and run until sunset.
Our sailing class is designed for the student who has little or no sailing experience. All teaching is a hands-on approach with a seasoned sail instructor in each boat.
Total cost of the sailing class in $400.
$100 for membership in the Edison Boat Club and $300 for our sailing program.
The Flying Scot day sailor is a 19-foot stable center boarder. The Scot is easy-to-sail, forgiving and fun. The Flying Scot is used for pleasure sailing and well as racing throughout the Detroit area.
The Ultimate 20 sailboat is a monohull with multihull performance. It is a dry and stable platform with a large cockpit. The Ultimate 20 features a deck mounted bow-sprit and is capable of planning. There is a large class in the the Detroit area which makes for good one design sailing.
The Crescent Sailboat was built exclusively in Detroit beginning in 1953. Crescents are 24 feet long, featuring a full keel and symmetrical spinnaker. They are a golden piece of history in Detroit and are still one design racing.
